My husband and I ventured out to dinner at Manila Resto on a Friday evening. We were seated right next to the window on Algoma Street. On my left was the warm colorful atmosphere of the restaurant. On my right, the architecture and characters of Oshkosh. To start the...
Quarantine & Staff Cause Delays for Thai Ginger Bistro
Located on busy College Avenue in Appleton is Thai Ginger Bistro. The sign was up for months. I remember seeing it, and getting really excited about this new restaurant. I waited and waited, and finally in June 2020 they opened their doors to the people of the fox valley. I finally made my way there with my family in early March.
We opted for dine in, and the restaurant has plenty of space, and we were far away from other patrons. Reservations are recommended, but since we beat the evening dinner rush we were seated rather quickly. Once seated our waitress came and brought hot towels for the table. That in itself was a rather nice touch. Of course I always carry hand sanitizer with me (who doesn’t at this point) but hot towels offer a sense of cleanliness that hand sanitizer could never.
Mai Tai in a Coconut & Chicken Satay
It was a Friday night and I had trouble deciding which cocktail to try. I ended up going with a mai tai! Nothing like a fruity tropical drink to cure my Wisconsin winter blues. My mother also ordered the coconut juice. It took a while to bring out because it was in an actual coconut. Our server joked with us “Sorry for the wait, your coconut must still be in Thailand”. But it was certainly worth the wait. Definitely recommend, but according to the menu it is a seasonal item.
Now for apps, we ordered the chicken satay that came with a side of house peanut sauce. We also ordered some spring rolls, which were delicious, they also came with a side of the house peanut sauce. There was definitely plenty of peanut sauce to go around our table that night! The waitress then came out with 3 different soup samples for all of us to try.
Chef’s Special – Som Wan Gai
When it came down to the ordering my main dish, I opted for something from the ‘Chef’s Special’ section. I chose dish number 21 ‘Som Wan Gai’ described as: “freshly sliced chicken lightly dipped in egg batter, deep fried, and then stir fried with chili, pepper, garlic, scallion, and orange peel in spicy orange sauce.” I love all of those ingredients individually, so I was excited to try them together in this dish. Once my dish arrived it was crispy, flavorful, and oh so tasty! The orange sauce was delicious.
Yet another great Thai place has been added to the Thai restaurant roster in the fox cities. Next time I go, I hope to try a curry. They are open for dine in, and carry out. Hopefully delivery will be available in the future!
They are open Monday- Saturday and the hours are as follows: 11am- 2:30pm
