Stick with Sticky Fingers

Stick with Sticky Fingers

As a baker myself, I make a point to try all the local bakeries. I heard from several people that a new bakery was opening in Kaukauna, and as soon as they posted their menu, I couldn’t wait to try it. Right in the heart of downtown Kaukauna, Sticky Fingers opened in...

Do Not Attempt to Dodge this Caribbean Taste

Tuesday. What is there to do on a Tuesday? Hardly anything, ever, really. Tuesday falls too early in the week and yet is so far removed from the weekend. Sometimes it is just another Monday masquerading as a Tuesday. 313 Dodge might just be what you are looking for....

Wisconsin Staples at Gabe’s Wisconsin Kitchen and Tavern

Wisconsin Staples at Gabe’s Wisconsin Kitchen and Tavern

As I’m getting used to living in Wisconsin, I’m discovering some of the Wisconsin staples when it comes to food and spirits. I knew about Spotted Cow and cheese curds before I moved to Wisconsin, but that was about it. Fortunately, Gabe’s Wisconsin Kitchen and Tavern...

Bushels of Fun at Bauer’s Apple Shed

Bushels of Fun at Bauer’s Apple Shed

As soon as the leaves begin to change, even ever so slightly, so does my weekly menu. When the shades of green turn to red and orange, my refrigerator, once full of peaches, quickly becomes home to all things apple. Taking a trip to a local apple orchard is my...

Faris Popcorn is Poppin’

Faris Popcorn is Poppin’

When I previously lived in Illinois, I became familiar with the popcorn chain “Garrett Popcorn.” One of my favorites mixes was their Garrett Mix, their world famous cheddar and caramel corn mix. When I moved to Wisconsin, I wasn’t sure if I would find a popcorn...

The Howard is a historic and elegant event space located in the heart of Oshkosh. The building, built in 1927, hosts private and community events. On Thursday and Friday evenings, the basement of the venue opens up to the public for bowling, craft beverages, and bites. As you descend the staircase at the Howard, you are transported to a swanky bowling alley and bar.

My husband and I came to the Lanes on a Friday night to wind down after a long week. We bellied up to the bar and were waited on by one of the Lanes bartenders, dressed to complement the art deco detail that surrounded us. With a newly acquired taste for good whiskey, my husband and I were impressed with the varied and comprehensive list. My husband ordered the Smoke Show specialty cocktail. Made with smoked whiskey, the cocktail was a complex blend of smoke, sweetness, and spice.

I chose the Boulevardier, the featured Howard Throwback. A Boulevardier is one of my favorite classic cocktails. My husband, who occasionally makes one for me at home, was humbled by the final product. Sweet, bitter, and smooth, the cocktail was perfect. Even if you’re not a whiskey lover, the Lanes offers many unique cocktails with a variety of spirits. There are also craft beer and wine selections. Specials, including a rotating classic cocktail and staff pick, ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

After diving into our drinks we decided to order one of the Lanes pizzas. We chose the pickle pizza, which was full of crunchy, salty, melty dill goodness. A surprising unique dish to go with our exceptional sips.

Drinks. Check. Pizza. Check. Dessert was next on our list. We could not ignore the ‘Snacks and Sweets’ section of the Lanes menu, which happened to include a half pound chocolate chip cookie. It was the weekend and there were two of us, so partake in this decadent treat we did! It was warm and gooey and covered in a delicious semi sweet frosting. We gobbled it up. Forks were required.

To finish off our evening of indulgence, we decided to end with a whiskey flight. After staring at the beautiful bar full of whiskey bottles all night, it was hard to walk away without trying a few neat pours. We ordered the ‘All Ryes On Me’ flight including three delectable bourbons and ryes. We sniffed and sipped to our hearts’ content.

The Lanes is a modern speak-easy. Go hide away from your worries and responsibilities for an evening. Enjoy a drink as the soundtrack of bowling pins dropping, conversation, and music plays in the background. Choose a cocktail, cookie, pizza, or all three! Pick your poison. You won’t be disappointed.
